Training Cost and ROI Formulas

Employee Time Cost = Employees Trained × Training Hours per Employee × Average Employee Cost per Hour

Total Training Investment = Direct Training Costs + Employee Time Cost

Cost per Employee Trained = Total Training Investment ÷ Employees Trained

Net Financial Benefit = Estimated Training Benefits − Total Training Investment

Training ROI (%) = (Net Financial Benefit ÷ Total Training Investment) × 100

Worked Example

A company trains 20 employees for 4 hours each. The average employee cost is ₹250 per hour.

ExpenseAmount
Trainer fees₹30,000
Training materials₹10,000
Venue and equipment₹5,000
Travel and accommodation₹8,000
Software or technology₹2,000
Other expenses₹5,000
Employee time cost (20 × 4 × ₹250)₹20,000
Total training investment₹80,000

If the estimated monetary benefits attributable to training are ₹1,20,000:

  • Cost per employee = ₹80,000 ÷ 20 = ₹4,000
  • Net financial benefit = ₹1,20,000 − ₹80,000 = ₹40,000
  • Training ROI = (₹40,000 ÷ ₹80,000) × 100 = 50%

Important Disclaimer

This calculator provides estimates based on the values entered. Training benefits can be difficult to measure and may be affected by factors other than training. Use a defined evaluation period, reasonable evidence for monetary benefits, and consistent cost categories. The calculator does not independently verify benefits or prove that training caused the reported results. If total training investment is zero, ROI is not calculated.
